The Blur Tool: How We Solved a Big Privacy Problem

I love live demos. They energize me, and the more I get into them, the more I want to share details that other people would probably skip. I'm talking about fearlessly digging into our tools to show potential customers and colleagues how our products work in real-life scenarios. This often means showcasing real customer results. But there’s a catch: you can’t display these results without also revealing sensitive client details—an obvious no-go. At Brighton SEO, we knew we'd run into this problem while we were demoing RivalFlow in person.

So we built a solution. We call it the Blur Tool, and it’s a game-changer for marketers and agencies who want to share results while keeping private info, well, private.

And that’s when we thought: why not share this with everyone? It’s free, easy to use, and customizable for practically any platform. That way marketers and agencies can safely share anonymized client results, whether in presentations, demos, or content creation.

Below, we’ll dive into the story, features, and how you can start using it.

The Origin of the Blur Tool

The Blur Tool began as a simple Chrome extension, created to solve a common challenge: demonstrating real results without exposing sensitive client data. At trade shows, we wanted to showcase RivalFlow’s effectiveness using actual customer outcomes. However, live demos ran into one big issue—data privacy.

That’s where Will Jackson, one of our top developers, stepped in. He created a Chrome extension that lets users selectively blur (hide) specific elements on any webpage. It worked so well that attendees asked us for a version of their own and, for agencies, it's for good reason.

Where Blurring is a Benefit

Agencies can run into a challenge: they want to prove to their potential customers that they can get results. Their most compelling work for current clients makes for the perfect story. But now they've hit a catch. They need to protect the interests of those very clients, and that means protecting their privacy and identifiable details. This varies with different industries of course, but most businesses want to control the level of details they're sharing--at least to some degree.

This gives you a lot more freedom to demonstrate more meaningful parts of your business without being distracted by what you shouldn't show.

How It Works

The Blur Tool makes it easy for anyone to anonymize client data directly from marketing tools like Google Search Console (GSC) or GA4. Usually you would only have this available in post-production editing. It's fairly standard with screenshots but a lot more complicated with video. (And nearly impossible in person.)

Here’s a quick rundown of its features:

  • Custom Blurring Rules: Select and blur specific elements on a page using an easy right-click option.
  • Adaptability: Works with a variety of platforms—whether it’s GSC, GA4, or conversion optimization tools like VWO.
  • Export Configurations: Save your settings to a JSON file for easy sharing.
  • Easy to Use: The WYSIWYG interface is intuitive enough for non-developers, yet robust for advanced users.
  • Customize for Different Pages: Create rules for specific URLs or apply them broadly across a platform.

During the video, Will demonstrates these parts, step by step. He even shows how you can inspect elements on a page, build custom blurring configurations, and even adjust settings for different pages—all with just a few clicks.

Solving a Privacy Problem Opened More Doors

Marketers and agencies often face the challenge of proving their value to prospective clients. This tool eliminates the loss of authenticity when people feel you're cherry-picking results. What really matters though is ensuring client confidentiality. Now, you can confidently showcase real data to win over new clients or justify the ROI of your services.

"We built this to share our customer results, but now anyone can use it to make compelling presentations or videos." — Mike Roberts

It's a powerful option for teams. Obviously trade show use is really specific, but there are more ways that this can free up marketers and businesses to share insights that would have been caused some conflicts before.

  • Winning New Clients: Anonymize data from tools like GSC to show prospective clients real results without revealing existing client info.
  • Content Creation: Use it to make videos that feel more authentic when they use real results
  • Give More Compelling Tours: Share a behind-the-scenes look at your SaaS product from your personal account with an extra layer of security on your login details.
  • Early Product Development Preview: Share parts of an upcoming feature, even if the rest isn't ready for public viewing
  • Bring it into Your Workflow

The tool is free to download and easy to use. If you’d like us to tailor the Blur Tool for a specific platform, let us know—we’re always eager to develop tools that help marketers shine.

This Chrome extension was born out of necessity, but like many of our projects, we saw some uses for it outside of just being an internal tool. Creative problem solving and customer feedback can lead to innovations that benefit everyone. Try it out, and let us know what you think.
